Sue
Burkhart
performs on classical and electric guitars as well as other stringed
instruments. She has a Master’s degree in classical guitar performance
from the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT, and was one of the
original founders of the Connecticut Classical Guitar Society. Since
1988, Sue has been on the music faculty at Wesleyan University in
Middletown, CT, and has taught at the Community Music School of
Springfield since 1987. Sue was a featured instructor and performer at
the 1998 National Guitar Summer Workshop in New Milford, CT.
Sue has opened for and appeared with artists ranging from Adrian
Legg, Preston Reed, and Ani DiFranco to Howard Levy and Trio Globo, and
has been a guest artist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, the
Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Consort. Sue’s radio
appearances have included “Open Air New England” with Faith Middleton on
National Public Radio and “Up the Creek” with Johnny Memphis on WRSI,
Greenfield, MA. Currently Sue can be heard performing with Viva
Quetzal or her own rock group,
SuperKart.

Roberto
Clavijo was born in Chile where he's been a professional musician
since the age of 18. He was the director of a folkloric song and
dance g roup in Chile. He later toured much of South and Central
America with the renown folkloric group Guamary, playing in folk clubs,
on television and university concerts in Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Chile,
and Curacao. Roberto came to the United States in 1981. He
has toured Great Britain in 1992-1993, with the group Gypsy Real,
playing on BBC radio in England and Wales. As a member of Viva
Quetzal since 1993 he can be heard performing on quenas,
zampoñas, charango, Venezuelan cuatro, and vocals. Roberto
is also a skilled folkloric wind and stringed instrument maker. |

Juan
Carlos Carpio grew up playing music in his home country of Ecuador.
He then moved to Europe to perform with various groups throughout
Belgium, Holland and France. He studied music at the Jazz Studio in
Antwerp, Belgium.While living in New York city he was a
musician-in-residence for The Pregones Theater Company and The Puerto
Rican Travelling Theater. At this time he also worked as an educator
for the Latino Society of the Educational Arts. In recent years he's
toured Latin America and the United States with the Chilean based group
Altiplano, one of the worlds most outstanding contemporary Andean
ensembles. Juan Carlos is currently performing with Viva Quetzal and
working as a Spanish teacher at Hampshire College and Hartsbrook School
in Amherst, Ma.

Jon Weeks
performs on flute, saxophones, wind synth, quena, congas, and small
percussion. He has studied music at Berklee College of Music, Westfi eld
State College and Holyoke Community College. Jon has performed with
many latin, jazz, and rock bands up and down the East Coast such as Sol
Y Canto, Orquesta Unidad, Ray Gonzalez, Jose Gonzalez, The Temptations
and many others. Jon is currently teaching private lessons at Downtown
Sounds (Northampton, MA) and The Family Music Center (Greenfield, MA).
He is also director of instrumental ensembles at The Charlemont Academy (Charlemont,
MA). Currently he can be heard performing with Viva Quetzal,
Joe Velez & Creación,
Satinwood, Northside Saxophone Quartet, and the
50’s rock group
Shakin’ All Over. |

Jeff
Nissenbaum has been a professional drummer for over 15 years. After
studying classical violin for ten years, he began his drum studies with
David Barrett. Jeff studied with Keith Copeland and Max Roach at the
UMass Jazz in July workshop. He performed for the Lee Strasberg
Creative Center in Los Angeles in 1989 and the Bright Moments Festival
with the Afro-Andean band Quetzal in 1994. In addition, he has
performed for and recorded with numerous contemporary groups of varying
styles, including Ben Demerath, Steel Wave, and the Muze Jazz Ensemble. |
